4 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Windshield

Making the choice to replace your windshield can be a big one. It takes time to drive to an auto glass company and wait for them to complete the appointment (unless that is, you hire a mobile windshield repair company, which brings that service to you).

Unfortunately, waiting to replace that windshield is never a good idea. The windshield is integral to the structural design of the car, which means that if you're involved in even a minor accident, your windshield will be affected.

Here are a few signs that it's time to get a windshield replacement. Unlike some other jobs that you can do in your car, this is something that should always be performed by a professional.

1. Failing the Safety Inspection

Though not technically a safety hazard, if your windshield is cracked beyond repair, then you'll most likely fail your safety inspection. It's worth it to take a few seconds and inspect the surface to see if there are any cracks, and if so, how bad the damage is. A simple phone call now can allow you to schedule your windshield replacement before your upcoming inspection, that way you won't have to drive back a second time and have it looked at again.

2. Needing to Repair Again and Again

Cracks may be random, but if you're having to continuously fix a certain spot over and over again, then it might be a sign that the windshield was either installed improperly or is facing an underlying issue. Either way, a windshield replacement may be the best way to treat the issue, since the cost of continuous repairs is going to add up over time.

3. Cold Weather Damage

Many people have made the mistake of pouring hot water on a cold windshield to defrost it. If your windshield doesn't crack immediately, pouring hot water on a frozen surface will substantially weaken the surface and make it prone to shattering. If you have tried this technique during the winter months, you might need to have a full windshield replacement done for safety's sake.

4. Broken Windshield

This one is saved for last because it should be the most obvious. If there's a piece of your windshield that has completely broken off, no matter how small, you should have the whole windshield replaced. A broken or jagged window isn't going to do you any favors, and in fact, may cause more harm than good.
